Energy flows. Matter cycles.

Do not write “energy cycles.” Heat leaves. Carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and water are reused.

• GPP = total photosynthesis. NPP = GPP − plant respiration. Consumers eat NPP.
• ~10% rule: most energy does not reach the next trophic level, so chains stay short.
